Educational Outreach

Students Organizing for Sustainability is committed to the education of the next generation of students.  The educational outreach program was launched in the spring of 2008 with Georgia Tech students teaching a class about sustainability to environmental science students at North Druid Hills and Miller Grove High Schools in Dekalb County.   Dr. Bill Witherspoon from the Fern Bank Museum of Natural History helped find appropriate high schools so that we could pilot this program.

Rabun Gap Nacoochee School

Our most recent project was a presentation to about 300 students at Rabun Gap Nacoochee School (RGNS) in Rabun Gap, GA.  Our students presented at Convocation, which is a time when all students from the high school and middle school come together for a little over an hour to go over school business and other topics.  This gave us an opportunity to talk to all the students about how they can be more sustainable in their everyday lives and how to organize on their own campus to help RGNS continue to make changes that will not only save their campus money, but make a positive impact on their mountain environment as well.

Rabun Gap is a leader in the rural mountain region that it calls home.  The changes this school makes has an impact on the towns of Clayton, Dillard and Mountain City.  Any changes made by RGNS will hopefully inspire these other communities to move in a similar direction.
